Vancouver port sustainability study

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has released a study of the port’s economic impact on local communities, provinces and Canada overall.

Compared with the last report in 2012, the economic output from port activities in 2016 increased by CAD$4.2bn to $24.2bn, with a 17% increase in jobs across Canada from 98,800 to 115,300.

“This data demonstrates the significant role of Canada’s largest port in the economic prosperity of our country,” said Robin Silvester, president and chief executive officer of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. “The report shows the meaningful impact of the port to employment and our collective prosperity locally, provincially and nationwide.”

The port authority has also launched its annual sustainability report, which describes how economic, environmental and social sustainability issues are being addressed and measured.

The port authority, which last year announced its vision to be the world’s most sustainable port, produced the report to outline its work across areas including strategic investment and asset management, healthy ecosystems and Aboriginal relationships.

Mr Silvester added: “We are proud of the work we are doing to accommodate Canada’s trade needs, while at the same time maintaining a healthy environment and enabling thriving communities. We look forward to continuing our work towards a lower carbon economy while we enable growth and economic prosperity through trade.”

The port authority works with tenants, terminals and other stakeholders to reduce air emissions and electricity use, as well as improve and create wildlife habitats and minimise noise impacts to protect the environmental sustainability of the port.
